Authorities warn of dangerous slimming pills

The Rhineland-Palatinate State Examination Office (LUA) warns of slimming pills with dangerous side effects. The slimming pills "Reduce Weight Fruta Planta", which are sold on the Internet, contain the drug substance sibutramine, which is banned in the EU, the state investigation office in Koblenz announced.

Time and again alleged slimming pills appear on the Internet, which should help to achieve a top figure without much effort. Most of the time, the articles are advertised as pure natural products and possible side effects are not mentioned. In the case of the slimming pills "Reduce weight Fruta Planta", which the Rhineland-Palatinate State Examination Office now warns of, the manufacturer advertised with natural ingredients, but did not disclose the active ingredient sibutramine. When used, there are serious side effects, such as high increases in blood pressure or heart disease, the LUA explained.

Slimming pills advertise with natural ingredients The slimming pills were confiscated by the Trier customs office and sent to the LUA for examination. The slimming products "Reduce weight Fruta Planta" advertised on the packaging with "100 percent pure nature", whereby exotic fruits such as lime, papaya or the fruit of the noni tree were given as ingredients. However, the LUA's investigation showed that, contrary to the declaration on the packaging, the slimming pills actually contained the active ingredient sibutramine, which is not approved in the EU.

Dangerous side effects of the active ingredient sibutramine The active ingredient sibutramine contained in the slimming pills was approved until the beginning of 2010 in Europe under medical supervision for the treatment of obesity (obesity). However, several studies have pointed to serious side effects of the active substance, so that the sibutramine-containing drugs with the brand name "Reductil" have been withdrawn from the market in both the USA and Europe. The approval for the active substance sibutramine is pending. In various studies, symptoms such as headache, dry mouth, nausea and vomiting, numbness, high blood pressure and irregular heartbeat were mentioned as possible side effects. The LUA also warned that sibutramine could cause acute heart disease and that taking psychotropic drugs (antidepressants, neuroleptics) could lead to dangerous interactions. Patients with hyperthyroidism, angina pectoris, sleep disorders, high blood pressure, epilepsy, cardiac arrhythmias and disorders of the liver and kidney function should under no circumstances use sibutramine, as this can result in massive side effects. There have also been deaths from the side effects of sibutramine, the LUA said.

Dangerous slimming pills with changing names Although the trade in sibutramine-containing slimming pills is prohibited in Germany and sales are punishable, the slimming pills are always offered under changing names on the Internet, the LUA explained. The unsuspecting consumer is deceived with promises such as "100 percent natural ingredients" and exposes himself to a significant health risk. It is therefore strongly advised not to buy such products over the Internet, especially if the promised slimming effects seem as utopian as those of the “Reduce weight Fruta Planta” slimming pills.
